LG unveils 4K/Ultra HD streaming technology at Mobile World Congress 2013

Mobile gamers might want to pay attention to the 4K/Ultra HD streaming technology being demonstrated by LG this week at MWC 2013. It has the potential to alter the way mobile phones and tablets will be used in the future to make the gaming experience that much more fun and immersive at home. LG’s system is designed to work with Miracast’s peer-to-peer wireless screening technology via Wi-Fi to transmit what you are viewing on your mobile device directly to LG’s high-resolution TVs.
Designed for Android-based devices, LG’s 4K/Ultra HD streaming tech reportedly upscales 1080p content to 4K. At first glance, the results look promising with the gaming content that was being demonstrated. How this will translate to 4K/Ultra HD movie content is unknown at this point, but it certainly opens the door for consumers who will want to stream Ultra HD content to their $20,000 (cough) Ultra HDTVs in the future.
LG’s 84LM9600 84 -inch  4K/Ultra HDTV is currently on sale. The company claims to have sold more than 300 sets already which, considering the price tag and , is fairly impressive. Digital Trends’ A/V Editor Caleb Dension already had the opportunity to spend some “quality” time with the LG 84LM9600 and came away duly impressed. LG hasn’t provided any additional information in regard to the availability of the Ultra HD streaming technology, but it appears to be just over the horizon.

Why LG acquired WebOS and what it means for the future of Smart TV

The Internet is abuzz today over news that LG Electronics has acquired WebOS from Hewlett Packard (HP). The topic is getting a fair amount of traction, partly because the struggling mobile operating system hasn’t made headlines in a while, but also because CNET apparently broke rank by publishing news of the acquisition before it was supposed to and is drawing heat over the mistake.
But in the rush to get the news out as soon as possible and revel a bit in the missteps of the competition, Internet news outlets have neglected to take on perhaps the most obvious question surrounding the acquisition: Why?
First, here’s a recap of the news: LG scooped up WebOS from HP, including the source code, documentation, websites, and all of the intellectual property and patents that came with it when HP acquired Palm in April 2010. LG’s stated intention is to incorporate WebOS into its Smart TV platform – but why would it want to do that?
LG’s Smart TV platform showed significant improvement in 2012. Some of LG’s sets even made the top of our list of the best smart TV platforms for cord cutters, thanks to intuitive menu layouts. Why, then, would LG want to snatch up the flailing, dated mobile operating system platform that has been the bane of HP since it was acquired, and integrate it into an already successful platform? We contacted John I. Taylor, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications at LG Electronics, to see if he could shed some light on the deal.
According to Taylor, one of the key interests LG has in WebOS are some of the people that come with it. “[There's a] tremendous amount of talent in the WebOS organization,” he says. “LG has made offers for them to become employees of LG Electronics to develop software for LG Smart TV.” Taylor went on to explain that WebOS will be at the core of its new Silicone Valley lab.
So it would seem that LG’s next-generation of smart TVs won’t necessarily look like a throwback to the 2009 Palm Pre. It’s the team of WebOS developers that LG really seems to be after – a team that can assist LG in making a pivotal transition in the way Smart TV works. According to Taylor, LG intends to move away from its existing app-based platform to a web-based platform. That’s where WebOS’s cloud-based technologies – also now owned by LG – will come in particularly handy. It is possible that, by moving things to the cloud, LG’s Smart TVs will require far less processing power, ultimately lowering cost and setting a new bar for the industry.
We can expect some facets of LG’s Smart TV platform to stick around, however. Taylor indicated that LG’s Magic Motion Remote won’t be going anywhere, adding that WebOS was particularly well-suited to work with LG’s Wii-style remote control solution.
Though it is highly unlikely that WebOS will ever make it into LG’s smartphone line (LG is tucked deep into bed with Android at this point), Taylor did indicate that the company intends for WebOS to make its way into other LG products, including its Smart Appliances.

2014 Mercedes S-Class to feature unparalleled levels of tech and refinement

For several months now we’ve been learning little tidbits about the forthcoming 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Now we’ve learned the tentative unveil date and some drivetrain and tech details.
Mercedes plans to debut the all-new S-Class this May at an invite-only event, most likely in Germany. Production will begin in August on the base S-Class – if it’s even really fair to call any S-Class “base.” The S350 will then officially launch in September with the S550 4MATIC and the S63 AMG 4MATIC following in October and November respectively.
The S-Class will feature a new nine-speed automatic transmission, which is a derivative of the current seven-speed offering. The new nine-speed, which transmission manufacture ZF says is the physical limit for modern automatics, provides the S-Class with all-new levels of fuel efficiency and sportiness.
On the inside, S-Class customers will be greeted with levels of refinement and technology never before seen on the S-Class. Mercedes designers have developed a cabin air quality control system called “Air Balance Package” that filters, ionizes, and also perfumes air entering the S-Class cabin.
On the tech front, the S-Class will feature two 12.3-inch displays. One will be mounted in the center console, which will display the COMAND system, and one in place of the instrument cluster. According to WorldCarFans, an Audi MMI-like touch-pad system will be included in 2015 S-Classes.
Now that Daimler has done away with the Maybach brand, the S-Class has to step up and compete against the high-end luxury brands. To do this, Mercedes has designed a new suspension control system called “Magic Body Control.” This innovative system uses forward-facing cameras to watch for motorway imperfections and adjusts the suspension accordingly to limit passenger disturbance.
To distinguish the S-Class from its competition further, Mercedes plans to build a four-door convertible version of the S-Class, much like its 2007 Ocean Drive concept. To us, this means the S-Class is just about to lose a whole lot of its fuddy-duddy persona and become a lot more stylish.
When we know more – hopefully before May – we’ll be sure to bring it to you.
